Who is God and who are we in him?

Jesus is Immanuel!

Jesus is Immanuel
Thomas F. Torrance

The late Thomas F. Torrance has really inspired me and led me to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. I now understand better that Jesus is Immanuel! Here are some excerpts from his book, Preaching Christ Today: The Gospel and Scientific Thinking on page 13:

“What bowls me over every time I read about Jesus in the Gospels is not the wonderful things he did, not the so-called nature miracles in which the wind and the sea obeyed him, or even his making the dead alive again, for if Jesus is really God, as John Polkinghorne the Cambridge mathematical physicist has said, one would expect that, for he was the Creator personally present in the midst of his creation. If you really believe that Jesus is God become incarnate you will have no trouble with the miracles. No! What overwhelms me is the sheer humanness of Jesus, Jesus as the baby at Bethlehem, Jesus sitting tired and thirsty at the well outside Samaria, Jesus exhausted by the crowds, Jesus recuperating his strength through sleep at the back of a ship on the sea of Galilee, Jesus hungry for figs on the way up to Jerusalem, Jesus weeping at the grave of Lazarus, Jesus thirsting for water on the Cross—for that precisely is God with us and one of us… Far from overwhelming us, God with us and one of us does the very opposite, for in sharing with us all that we are in our littleness and weakness he does not override our humanity but completes, perfects, and establishes it.

“What I find always most breathtaking, however, is that in Jesus the Lord God Almighty, the Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible, stoops down to be so fully one with us… In Jesus, the Word by whom all things in heaven and earth were created became human and communicates with us and addresses us in the frail creaturely form.”

Jesus is Immanuel — the Christmas Message

This is good news — the gospel! This is the Christmas message! Jesus (the God who saves) is Immanuel (God with us)! Yes, Jesus is Immanuel! In Jesus, God who is our Savior is with us and fully one of us! In Jesus we have already been reconciled and included in God’s life and love! Nothing whatsoever can separate us from God’s love.

What great good news! Believe it and enjoy life and love in Jesus Christ!

Trinitarian Theology Books and Theologians

Today I received a book entitled, “All About Glory” all the way from Australia from the author himself, David Kowalick, a Trinitarian theologian. I have begun to check the cover pages and it seems to be an exciting book to read “loaded with the glory of God” according to the foreword by C. Baxter Kruger. I’ll begin reading it tonight.

Trinitarian Theology Books

A year or so ago, I also received two books namely: “How to Read T. F. Torrance” by Dr. Elmer Colyer and “Incarnation: The Person and Life of Christ” by Thomas F. Torrance. These two books were given to me by Stuart Johnson, another Trinitarian theologian of Perichoresis Australia. After some months later, he again sent me several books by Dr. C. Baxter Kruger through a friend. It greatly enhanced my understanding of what I believe in! Amazing!

I keep on wondering why has God connected me with these newfound friends and theologians? Who am I to receive such a blessing which I did not ask for? Why are they sending me these books? Well, maybe it’s another one of God’s wonderful ways of giving me more understanding about the Triune God. Through their loving ministry and through these books I gained a lot more understanding about the Lord. And I gained some new friends of like mind from down under! Isn’t that great? Thank you Lord!

It’s All About Faith

“It’s all about faith,” some would say. Usually, what they mean is that salvation has nothing to do with “works.” This is the view of those who believe that all we need is “faith” in order to be saved. On the other hand, some people may believe that “doing good works” is very important in order to attain salvation. Either way, in both of these two points-of-view, they do show a certain kind of conviction, a certain belief on something. That is, both do exhibit some kind of faith in what they stand for, in what they believe in.

Atheists, Agnostics Have Belief Too!

Even atheists who say they don’t believe that God exists, do believe in something. That is, they really do believe that God does not exist. Without them realizing it, they actually have a belief too. That’s their faith, their conviction. Even agnosticism is some kind of belief too—they claim neither faith nor disbelief in God. Their claim is their belief. So in this sense, it’s all about faith.

Everyone Has Faith

Some people may trust a certain politician or theologian but not another. Some believe the earth is flat. That is their faith. Believers in evolution are just that too. They also believe in something—they believe that we all come from monkeys through evolution. That’s their faith. Some scientists don’t believe in God. That is their religion too—their belief. Some have faith in their faith—they “declare it,” “name it and claim it.” That’s another belief too. Believers in Calvinism, Trinitarianism, Arminianism, Buddhism, communism, you name it—these are all beliefs. It would seem to me then that really, “it’s all about faith.”

Faith in the Faith of Christ

Faith does have an important role in our lives. And the most important faith that one needs to have — in so far as I’m concerned — is to have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is not my faith but the faith of Christ that will carry me through. Trust him with all of your life. Of course, that is my personal belief — my kind of faith.

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

(KJV Galatians 2:20)

Wanted: Men and Women of Integrity

Pork Barrel

Due to the pork barrel scam, a lot of government officials and others in the private sector are in the hot seat right now and are in the eyes of the public already guilty of graft and corruption. That’s just how it is. Aided by media, people can easily judge and condemn others without due process. Are these people guilty or not? Hopefully, we’ll soon find out who are really guilty and who are not and hopefully, may justice really prevail “without fear or favor.”

Is Honesty Still Important?

This reminds me of what the psalmist said in Psalm 15. He asked, “Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain?” (Psalm 15:1) In other words—if I may take the liberty of interpreting and applying this hymn or song into our modern times—the psalmist was asking, “Lord, who is worthy to enter your kingdom of heaven and live with you for all eternity?”

And the psalmist answered his own question by saying that this kind of person has this kind of attitude and character: “The one whose walk is blameless, who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from their heart; whose tongue utters no slander, who does no wrong to a neighbor, and casts no slur on others; who despises a vile person but honors those who fear the Lord; who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind; who lends money to the poor without interest; who does not accept a bribe against the innocent” (Psalm 15:2-5).

These are men and women of integrity. They are not corrupt and will not accept bribes. They have pure hearts willing to serve God and their fellowmen. They fully trust their lives to God no matter what.

The psalmist assures people with integrity that they will have their place in God’s kingdom by concluding, “Whoever does these things will never be shaken” (Psalm 15:5). Their reward is assured. They will be in God’s kingdom. The Lord will gladly welcome them with open arms.

With so many corrupt people in government, we really need more people with integrity to lead our people and our country today.

So, You Want to Preach and Teach?

Preaching and teaching
“Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.” (NIV James 3:1-2)

As a young ministerial trainee in 1985 and then later on as a young pastor more than 25 years ago, our leaders used to remind us of this verse. Since pastors are in preaching and teaching positions, we were always reminded that we will be judged more strictly. We therefore had to make sure that we were preaching and teaching faithfully according to God’s Word in the Bible. We were constantly reminded to be careful with whatever we preach and teach. Words can either edify or destroy the hearers.

Preaching & Teaching Responsibility

This is always a good reminder to all pastors and teachers and to all of us. With the advent of social media like Facebook for example, a lot of people can now express their views openly and we can be careless with what we share. The apostle James’ words should remind us constantly to be careful with whatever thoughts or views we share to others online.

When you want to share something, first ask: Is it according to God’s Word? Does it edify and build up others? Or does it destroy others and it only exalts your own ego? Those who presume to be teachers, those who would-be-pastors, and those who think they know better than others, should think twice before they say anything because those “who teach will be judged more strictly.”

Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan concerning Christ. That is why I am here in chains.  4 Pray that I will proclaim this message as clearly as I should.  5 Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity.  6 Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone. (Colossians 4:3-6)
