Surprise Birthday Party for my Wife

My wife never expected we were planning a birthday party for her. My family lived for some seven years in Pampanga but after my daughter graduated in college, we moved back to Laguna some 2 years ago so that my wife could take care of her ailing elderly mother.

Move to Laguna

Jojie’s 61st birthday party

She never expected we had a surprise birthday party for her. For some two years, my wife Jojie took care of her 88-year old mother who was diagnosed to be sick with stage 4 chronic renal disease. She was already on wheelchair when we moved to Laguna but as time passed her health deteriorated until she could no longer rise up out of bed. She was bedridden for the last remaining months until she died this last November 18. It was tough for my wife especially during the last few months. She had no assistant to help take care of her mom everyday. It was a real sacrifice and hard work to be a caregiver for her mom each and everyday.

Caregiving – A Tough Job

I was witness to how tough it can be to take care of a bedridden sick mother. I really appreciate my wife’s love and care for her mother. She took care of her even though she was very tired. She was always on call 24/7.

My very own 85-year old mother worked for many decades as a caregiver in the US. I only had a vague idea what that job really was but now I think I understand it much better. I am glad she has now retired from such kind of work for a good number years now. She has decided to come back home for good in the Philippines. I also appreciate my mom for such love and sacrifice for all of us her kids.

Surprise 61st Birthday

As a token of our love and appreciation for all my wife’s sacrifices, we planned a surprise party for her on her 61st birthday. We meant this to be a special day for her because we love her. I was also glad because my sister and my own mother was present during this very occasion along with my 2 sisters-in-law and 3 brothers-in-law with their wives.

It was a great celebration! Thanks be to the Lord for his gifts: my wife, my family and friends. Truly, the Lord knows how to give good gifts to his children!

Missed Blogging this Busy October

Blogging is what this site is all about but October must have been a busy month. I missed posting not even one blog. I was actually aiming to write a blog at least once a month but I didn’t realize it’s already November! Time flies so fast! So, I missed that one for October.

Flight to Cagayan de Oro

I was still in Baguio City on the first day of October and then on the 7th day flew to Cagayan de Oro City and stayed for about four days. My purpose in going there was to organize our church’s media team. I also visited the church members in the area. It was a privilege to preach to them  during their Sunday worship service in their local church.

Two Debuts in a Row

This October was also interesting for me because I was invited to two debut parties — one in Laguna and the other one in Pampanga for two consecutive days! The first debut party was in Laguna on the 20th and the following night on the 21st, I was in Pampanga. These were all special birthday parties for these two young ladies who turned 18. I thought that was quite a unique and rare experience for me.

On the 22nd of October, I got invited to preach during the Sunday worship service of our local church in San Fernando, Pampanga. Right after that, I went home to celebrate with my wife our 37th wedding anniversary. My wife was surprised and was really glad to receive flowers from me when I arrived home.

Second Flight to Cagayan de Oro This Month

I was back again in Cagayan de Oro on the 27th where I preached for two consecutive days to our northern Mindanao local churches gathered for the festival. I preached to them in the Cebuano dialect about the good news of Jesus Christ and what it means for a Christian and the Church. In the afternoon of the 28th, I was already in Maramag, Bukidnon to again join our Bukidnon church members gathered there for the festival.

I preached again the same Cebuano message about Jesus Christ to the Bukidnon church members the following day, the 29th during their worship celebration.  In the afternoon I gave a short talk to all the pastors, leaders and emerging young leaders about “expository preaching.”

I then proceeded to the Laguindingan airport and took a flight to Mactan in the evening. I stayed at the Mactan airport for the night as per advise from a friend instead of checking in at a nearby hotel.

Media meeting in Dumaguete City

First Time in Dumaguete City

In the early morning of the 30th, I took a flight bound for Dumaguete where I met our Visayas church members gathered for their morning’s festival celebration at the Bethel Guest House.

In the afternoon, I met the Visayas media team to give them some orientation and overview of what the media team was all about. The meeting place was a nice cafe for students named “Poppy Coffee.” I’m not sure thought if it was inside or outside the campus of Silliman University.

It was my first time to be in Dumaguete. It’s a nice city and I like it there. I hope to visit there again and hopefully next time, I could plan to meet my relatives in the area. I did not have a chance during that quick and “just passing through” visit on my way back home to Manila.

On the 31st of October, I was finally home with my family just in time to celebrate my father-in-law‘s 9th death anniversary the following day, November 1. The family usually gathers for a reunion during this time of the year. One of my sisters-in-law from Japan did arrive to join us in this Fen Santos family reunion.

So much activity! Thank you Lord for allowing me to participate in what you’re doing.

In the Sweet By and By

I’ve heard the term “In the Sweet By and By” since I was a young boy but I have never really taken the time to find out what this was all about. I knew it was an old hymn but I really didn’t know much about it until now.

Last night, as I attended the wake of my aunt who died a few days ago, this hymn was sung by the sisters and cousin of the deceased. No doubt they knew the hymn very well because all of them are choir members in their Christian church. They sang the song in acapella and I was touched by how they sang it and the lyrics of the hymn really inspired me. It was a fitting song for the occasion.

I found out later on the internet that this song is entitled “In the Sweet By and By” and it was written by Sanford F. Bennett in 1868! That’s one and a half centuries ago! The lyrics are quite simple but it’s really inspiring for those who hope, wait and trust in the Lord for their salvation. It gives hope and encouragement for people to carry on, despite life’s challenges, difficulties and even in the face of death.

May I share it here:

In the sweet by and by  (Sanford F. Bennett, 1868)

There’s a land that is fairer than day,
And by faith we can see it afar;
For the Father waits over the way
To prepare us a dwelling place there.

Refrain:
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore;
In the sweet by and by,
We shall meet on that beautiful shore.

We shall sing on that beautiful shore
The melodious songs of the blessed;
And our spirits shall sorrow no more,
Not a sigh for the blessing of rest.

To our bountiful Father above,
We will offer our tribute of praise
For the glorious gift of His love
And the blessings that hallow our days.

Here’s a short video during that evening:

Songs do touch the heart. And old hymns from centuries ago make it even more meaningful. Wouldn’t you agree?

Brisk Walking and Photoshooting at Nuvali

Due to my health condition, my wife and I visit the Nuvali Lakeside Picnic Grounds at least twice each week for an early morning brisk walk in the hope that it will help improve my health somewhat. It actually feels good when I’m able to have my morning exercise.

Nuvali Lakeside Picnic Grounds

The place is really quite nice and it has lots of scenic spots which I can’t help but take snapshots of. I guess I’ll never get out of this habit of taking snapshots wherever I go. Every time my wife and I go there, I always take snapshots and short videos. It has become a habit. If I have the time, I will gather all those shots and make it into one album and share it here in my blog site. For most of my recent shots (photos and videos), I’ve been using my Sony Xperia (F3216) smartphone.

Let me share a video which I took today at Nuvali.

Reflections at Nuvali Lakeside Picnic Grounds

Yesterday my wife and I went to Nuvali Lakeside Picnic Grounds for our usual brisk walking exercise. It has become our habit to go there regularly for my health’s sake. I’m now a senior citizen and some 4 years ago, I found out that I have a heart problem. So I need to take more care of myself.

As always, I could not help myself but take photos of the wonderful scenery around me. I always end up photoshooting aside from brisk walking haha!

For yesterday’s photos, it was quite a clear day and the water in the artificial lake was so clear and calm so I took advantage of the reflections on the water as my theme. For all these photos, I used my smartphone Sony Xperia F3216. It’s amazing just how cellphones have evolved nowadays to become great and handy cameras that can capture images up to 21 megapixels!

I have actually taken a lot of shots already of this same place.  But there is always something new and beautiful to shoot each time. As time permits, I will share it all here in my blog site.

High Resolution Photos Available

If you happen to need high quality resolution copies of these photos above, I actually have it. Just let me know and just maybe I can be of help to you.
