Some people like tattoos and some don’t. Reactions vary from love or hate. Some love tattooing themselves as a form of self-expression while some others may hate tattooing for religious or other reasons. One thing is clear to me though, tattooing — or tattoo art — has always been part of man’s civilization and people can argue for or against it. As for me, I love photography as an art expression and the opportunity to photoshoot a tattoed girl has presented itself and so what do I do? Of course, photoshoot haha!

From Diaries to Blogs

Before there was internet and before there was such a thing called blog or blog sites, some people used to have diaries. It’s a notebook or a log book where people write their personal experiences for the day. This is where they write their inner thoughts and feelings. Maybe some could not express their feelings openly so they write it in a log book and keep it a secret. It’s a private matter usually. And somehow, this exercise does have a healing and therapeutic effect on the person doing the writing. A person writes in his diary because it makes him feel good after he has poured out his heart in his diary.

Me and my eldest daughter back in 1986 in Bukidnon.

Some others don’t mind if their diaries are read by everyone. It really depends on the person. And of course, not all love to keep a diary, especially on a daily basis haha! During my younger days, I thought it was a “girly” thing to do. I never had any use for a diary at all.

The Advent of the Internet and Blog Sites

With the coming of the internet, some folks have begun to keep their diaries online. It was their “log book” or “web log” on the internet. This is where we got the term “blog.” It’s the short form of “web log” — a diary on the internet. But a blog is still essentially the same thing as the diary of old. Some prefer their blogs private and for their eyes only while some others don’t mind to show their blogs publicly. My blog site here is for everyone to see. Everyone can read and can comment on my blogs. But of course, I reserve the right to delete all offensive comments if I don’t like it haha! Just be nice to me okay?

Blog Sites that Generate Income

Nowadays blogging and creating blog sites have become big business for some. It’s no longer just a personal diary. It is now used for advertising and for generating income. I hope my blogs add value to one’s life and love in Jesus Christ. I hope that what I write may be of some use or food for thought for those who may happen to read it. And of course, I write for myself too. This is after all, my diary on the internet.

The Joson Brothers

There was a time when my brother (deceased) and I — the Joson Brothers — used to sing regularly in various Shakey’s Pizza parlors in Metro Manila — Recto Avenue, Espana, West Avenue, Mabini and Malate. As a young man, it was a time when I thought it was a good idea to earn a living as a folk singer and have some fun. Aside from Shakey’s Pizza parlors where we worked regularly, we were also called once in a while as alternate singers (when a singer or a band don’t show up for work) at the Bodega, My Father’s Moustache and at Hobbit House. We were called the Joson Brothers back then.

We started out as a duet but then later on our other younger brother (also deceased), joined us and we later formed a band by recruiting a drummer to join us. One of our younger sisters also joined us for a while so we had a lady singer for some time but we maintained the band name as the Joson Brothers. We sang mostly folk songs and a little bit of not-so-hard rock music. I was not really a good singer nor was I a very good bass guitarist — just trying hard to become one — but would you believe it my brother and I were able to work in Japan as musicians for some six months hahaha! And I don’t even know how to read notes — I just play it by ear.

Started as High School Band

My brother and I actually started band playing back during our high school days. It just so happened that ADSCO, our high school alma mater in Bayugan City, had acquired a complete set of band instruments and we got interested to check it out. So we just started tinkering with the guitar instruments until we eventually learned how to play it. I was about 14 years old and it was my first time to see and hold a real bass guitar haha! We eventually became the school’s band and performed in many school activities for some 3 years. We were also busy around town being frequently invited on various occasions even reaching up to the far town of Trento at one time. It was a fun time for me during my high school days being a band leader and bass guitarist.  Oh well, those were the days.

Striving After a Handful of Wind

Looking back—now that I’m a senior citizen — I can see that it was all for fun, for the love of music and for seeking something you don’t know what. It was like striving after a handful of wind — striving to really understand what the meaning and purpose of life is all about. I now know finally what I was looking for and I found it. I was after all, actually looking for a relationship, a deep and lasting relationship, a spiritual relationship, the need to connect with our Lord and Maker. This is what life is actually all about. It’s like “longing to be home.” I believe I finally found “home” with the Lord.

Actually, the Lord found me. “I once was lost, but now am found.” Amazing grace, isn’t it?

Living Like A Gentile

In Paul’s letter to the Galatians, he narrated how he opposed Peter to his face because he was clearly wrong (Gal. 2:11). Paul said that Peter was not acting according to the truth of the gospel (Gal. 2:14).  Those are strong words of rebuke! What was it that Peter did that was clearly wrong?  What did Peter do that was not according to the truth of the gospel? Let’s find out.

It was at the church at Antioch, north of Jerusalem,  that believers in Christ were first called “Christians” (Acts 11:28). Paul and Barnabas were also there as leaders in that congregation at that time. It is located somewhere in modern Turkey. According to Google, it is 678.3 kilometers from Jerusalem. That is quite some distance and would take a long time to travel during those days. Peter, whom we can safely assume to be a church leader coming from Jerusalem, visited Antioch to see the church members who were a mixture of both Jewish and Gentile Christians (Gal. 2:11).

Peter “Used to Eat with the Gentiles”

On this occasion, Paul said something significant. He said that Peter “used to eat with the Gentiles” (Gal. 2:12).  This clearly shows that Peter did it regularly — that is, eating with Gentile Christians on a regular basis. We don’t know how long his visit lasted but most likely, it was a long visit considering the distance involved.

But what’s wrong with Peter eating with Gentile Christians on a regular basis? Well, there must have been something wrong because Paul said so! And Paul told Peter about it!

In the Bible — as well as in modern use — the word, Gentile simply means that a person is not a Jew as is commonly understood. Most of us will be in that category — Gentiles. According to Jewish custom and law, the Jews were to separate themselves and should have nothing to do nor should they associate  with Gentiles. During those times, there were 3 Jewish laws that stood out which identified Jews from Gentiles namely: 1) circumcision, 2) dietary laws and, 3) Sabbath keeping.

Whether Peter ate unclean food or not is another topic for another blog but in this particular incident, Peter was clearly “eating with Gentiles” as Paul said which was a no-no for Jews back then.

But of course Peter understood that it was now alright to “eat with Gentiles” because he already understood from the Lord through a vision that he should “call no man common or unclean” (Acts 10). It was OK to mingle and eat with Gentiles contrary to Jewish customs and tradition. He understood that it was now alright to associate with Gentiles and especially so because these were his brothers and sisters in the Lord — the Gentile Christians at Antioch.

Double Standard Life

What then was the problem? Well, according to Paul it was Peter’s hypocrisy that was the problem. He was not acting in accordance with and in line with the truth of the gospel (Gal. 2:13-14). Certain men from James who were of the “circumcision group” (meaning, Jewish Christians) came to the Antioch church which caused Peter to  separate himself from his Gentile brothers—although he “used to eat”  with them. That was not good according to Paul.

But why was Peter afraid? Well, because these “certain men” were Jews —Jewish Christians from Jerusalem — “from James.” And Jews normally separated themselves from Gentiles. That was the problem. Peter was not acting consistent with what he knew was the truth. The other Jewish Christians including Barnabas were wrongly influenced too by Peter’s hypocritical attitude. That was not good for the church and for the gospel.

Before these Jewish Christians visited Antioch, Peter “used to eat” with the Gentile Christians. He knew it was alright as God had shown to him in a vision to “call no man common or unclean” (Acts 10). He was “living like a Gentile.” He was not “living like a Jew” although he was a Jew. He knew it was alright. But then because of his fear of what his fellow Jews might think about him, he separated himself from his Gentile brothers when his Jewish Christian brothers from Jerusalem arrived. That was a clear case of hypocrisy. He should have been consistent with his attitude and not become a respecter of persons. That was Paul’s point.

Law of Moses Not for Christians

Most likely, these visiting Jewish Christians must have been imposing their customs too as can be seen in the epistle to the Galatians itself and in Acts 15. Paul then clarified that the Jewish Christian brothers should not force nor impose their “Jewish customs” on their Gentile Christian brothers. The clear message is that it is alright to live like a Gentile and not “live like a Jew” if one is a Gentile Christian (Gal. 2:14).

This particular incident between Paul and Peter and the whole epistle of Galatians show that the Christians are not bound by the Law of Moses. That’s the clear message of the whole epistle to the Galatians. Christians have freedom in Christ to live like a gentile and not like a Jew following Jewish customs.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery” (Gal. 5:1).

Fascinated by Music and Great Musicians

Music does affect and move us. It touches our feelings, our hearts. Ever since I was a little boy I was always fascinated by talented people who could play a guitar, violin, drums or any musical instrument so exceptionally well, beyond my ability to do so. Music really does captivate our hearts and minds and exceptionally-talented musicians always inspire me to also wish I could have their great skills too. But I know that some are just so blessed and musically-gifted by the Lord while others are gifted in other ways. And I know as well that these great talents do spend a great deal of time, hard work and determination to excel even more in their God-given talents.

Lucy on violin
This beautiful young lady is not just a talented musician who could play the piano, guitar and violin. She is also a summa cum laude graduate of Psychology and she received a presidential award and recognition for being one of the “Ten Most Outstanding Students of the Philippines” (TOSP) for the year 2013.

My Exposure to Music

This was my wooden bass guitar from 1979 to 2007—some 28 years. When this was given to me by a musician, it was already about 10 years old according to the original owner. I gave this to a young man after begging me to give it to him in 2007 hahaha! He owns it now and he sent me this photo after he did some repairs.

The opportunity for me to learn playing a musical instrument started when I was about ten years old. I learned how to play a harmonica and a ukelele, just for fun. Then later on in high school, I began to learn more on how to play the normal 6-string guitar. I spent a lot of time playing and practicing just like kids do today. Then an opportunity came my way later on and I had the chance to learn how to play the bass guitar on my own without anyone’s help. I was then about 14 years old when my high school alma mater, Agusan del Sur College, acquired a complete set of musical instruments for a full band. It was there that I learned to play the bass guitar and I became the leader of the band.

Would you believe that later on in life — during the early 80s — I even became a leader of a band called the Joson Brothers? Yes, I did haha! That might surprise some of you. I worked for a good number of years earning a living as a folk singer in several Shakey’s Pizza parlors all over Metro Manila and other hangouts for music lovers. Yes, we played at My Father’s Moustache, Bodega and Hobbit House too. These were some of the places during the late 70s and early 80s where people just go there to enjoy listening to live music while having coffee, beer, light snack or even dinner for some. Yes, those were the days. Kids having fun. And I don’t even play the guitar nor do I sing so well haha! My brother did most of the singing. I was just the “second voice” and I managed and led the group seeing to it we had work every night. We were like kids having fun and earning a living at the same time. Well, I don’t consider myself as a very good bass guitarist and a good singer too but I guess I got away with it hahaha! We even reached Japan and worked there for six months.

Playing the Guitar For Fun

Now that I’m a senior citizen, I still love to play the guitar once in a while but only at home privately where no one can hear me sing but my wife and daughters haha! It’s good to sing and play the guitar at home once in a while. It gives you some kind of rest and relaxation doing something different from what you normally do in life. I’m still fascinated with people who could play the piano, guitar or any musical instrument so exceptionally well more than I can. How I wish I have their talent too! When I sing at home, I somehow could no longer reach a high pitch at this time unlike before when I was younger haha! Oh well… those were the good old days.
